ANNA NEZHNAYA »Succubus«

(+Performance by sara boroujeni)

Having been witness to countless Danses Macabres during Fin de Siècle and alluding to the smell of Baudelaire’s Fleurs du Mal, the mystical central figure of Anna Nezhnaya‘s new series »SUCCUBUS« evokes the olden days’ great dichotomy of Eros and Thanatos as it finds its way back to the Mise en Scène through the artist’s ‘sacral spaces’.
Recurring throughout her work, these spaces or backgrounds (often depicted as architectural sites) are meant to serve as physical manifestations of an imaginative collective consciousness; as stages for current discourses; temples.
This time now, sphinxes and chimères resemblant of no less than Medea, Salome or Judith take over these increasingly digital and proximate imageries and invite us to reflect on the modern day femme fatale, on inner demons, idealization and sexuality. On danger, fear, redefinitions and self determination.
When and where better to muse on the moon side of the dark than in post-fin-de-millenium Babylon-Berlin? Exactly, nowhere. But to be more precise:
